The Kitsune is mysterious, cunning, and a genius when it comes to setting up puzzles and traps. The Kitsune will deter Atsu’s journey in Ghost of Yotei in any way possible, so players are going to have to outwit the Kitsune by learning how the puzzles work in the Teshio Region that involve fox statues and a cipher. Throughout the entire Kitsune questline in Ghost of Yotei, players will come across many different fox statue puzzles, so we’ve compiled them all here in one place so that you know exactly what to do when you’re facing the next puzzle that’s halting progress between Atsu and the Yotei Six.
How to Translate the Kitsune Cipher in Ghost of Yotei
To start, it’s best to go through what the cipher actually means and how you can better understand it for the puzzles ahead. Players will get the cipher by progressing through the Kitsune main quest in the north region of Teshio Ridge. Once they do, it’s going to be imperative to understand how the puzzles work in this region. When you’re near a fox puzzle, you can view the cipher at any time by swiping Right on the Touch Pad. For a basic demonstration, this is how it works. If a fox statue lying down has the symbol of a square on it, then it means that the lying down fox must be rotated so that it is facing left. This rule applies to all symbols and corresponding foxes. However, players should be aware that the symbol with the lines (death) means that you should not interact with it, or else you will be placed into a kill trap.
Below is a rundown of every Kitsune puzzle to help you progress once you get the cipher!

- Facing right

Now, pick up the other fox statue, which has its left paw raised, and place it on the left podium to lock it into place. How to Solve the Get Into the Building Puzzle in Ghost of Yotei
Through the caverns after the Black Dye House, and after rescuing the prisoners, you’ll enter a hideout filled with shinobi. In this area, players are going to need to fight through the enemies, and across the path will be different fox statues in unique poses, with a symbol painted behind them. However, if you just want the puzzle solution, then head to the central building that’s lit with lamps, and has four foxes at the front of the building. It’s vitally important that players do not touch the fox on the back left, as this is marked with the death symbol and will summon more enemies. Here’s the order for the foxes:
- The front left fox (right paw raised fox) must be facing the right
- The front right fox (lying down fox) must be facing the right
- The back right fox (stalking fox) must be facing the left
- The back left fox doesn’t matter, so keep it facing forward
