These two clubs form one of the fiercest local rivalries in world football. There have been over 400 of these evenly contested derbies in history, with just over 100 games ending in draws.

With multiple instances of fan violence and changes in stadium ticket allocations for visiting teams from either club, things between Celtic and Rangers have seldom been without incident.

Despite their intense rivalry, more than 30 players have featured for both teams in their careers.

He was part of the Rangers team which lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972, and also helped them win the Scottish Cup in 1973, scoring their second goal in a 3–2 final victory over Celtic at Hampden Park.

The midfielder left for Tottenham in 1974 and spent three seasons there before joining Celtic in 1977. In his first season, Conn won another Scottish Cup medal with Celtic when they defeated his former club Rangers 1–0 in the final.

He made 32 appearances for Celtic in two seasons.
